"Home" at James Wegner Gallery at Riverland Community College

Dom Venzant (@domvenzant) of Symco Pottery Works and I (@phouka1477) just hung the show "Home" at the James Wegner Gallery at Riverland Community College in Austin, MN. The show runs from October 18 - November 15, 2019, and features work connected to the concept of "home" for each of us. My work interprets home a bit more in context of places I used to call home and now visit and revisit through painting; his work through functional pottery (and a non-functional installation).

"Elements" at Wargo Nature Center

Domonique Venzant, Erin Goedtel and I have work in Elements at Wargo Nature Center. Organized by Jeffrey Ebeling from Banfill-Locke, each of us were assigned one (or two) of the four Elements to interpret in our work.  Dom is fire/earth, Erin is air, and I am water.  You can still visit the show while it is up.

"Familiar Collections" - Erika Ritzel & Laura Andrews at RCTC!

This is the last week to see Erika Ritzel and my show "Familiar Collections" at RCTC in Rochester, MN.  This has been a labor of love for both of us, mining not only the people who are important to us, but also the objects that represent or remain after those people have passed on.

Here are a few images and some links to video from the show.  It was a delight to be able to display this work in such a beautiful space and really see it come to a new level of fruition.  Thanks to Crist Dahl for making this happen!  We will be working toward another iteration of this collaboration in 2019 at the Phipps in Hudson, WI - so stay tuned.

Heart of a Place at Banfill-Locke

I just completed a set of paintings for Heart of a Place, a two-person show with painter Susan Solomon at Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts in Fridley.

Featured paintings are larger scale pieces painted from plein air studies of Lebanon Hills in Dakota County, MN.  There are also a few from Kawishiwi Falls in Ely, MN.  The space is lovely and the staff, in particular Jeffrey, were super friendly and accessible.

The show runs from May 20 - June 17.

An artist reception will be held on Saturday June 3 from 6 to 8pm. There will be a poetry reading by Katrina Vandenberg and Deborah Keenan during the reception!  Below are some images of work from the show.

Die Blumen Sind Schön

New work!
Here is a video piece I have been working on, tentatively titled Die Blumen Sind Schön (which was one of the main things my mother learned to say in German when living in Germany). It is constructed from vhs garden footage that my uncle shot in 1994-95.  I reshot it and changed some of the speed, framing, etc.  Still a work in progress, thinking about whether I should add audio or not.
